Who We Are
|
The Red Cross Movement has a long and honorable history.. In 1859, a young Swiss businessman named Henri Dunant happened upon the aftermath of a battle between French and Austrian troops in Solferino, Italy. After he helped villagers care for the thousands of wounded soldiers from both sides, Dunant wrote a book describing his experience and in the closing pages, he emphasized the need for trained volunteers and the necessity for international cooperation for the sake of humanity. His book fell into the right hands and soon an international conference was held in Geneva, Switzerland in 1863 with 14 countries represented. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was formed with seven basic principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. |
